Top Ten Films of the Year so Far

Here’s a list of my ten favourite films of 2018 so far. Let me know in the comments what your favourite film of the year is too!

Disclaimer: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri officially came out last year in America which is why I’m not including it on this list. If I did include it, it would be number 1 as I think Three Billboards is possibly the best film of the 21st century so far, and that’s not an exaggeration. Check out my review of the film to hear what else I have to say about it.

10 – Searching

I saw a pre-screening of Searching and it’s definitely one for you to check out when it officially releases later this month. Great characters and performances all around

9 – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

I was pleasantly surprised with the new Jurassic World film, after not being impressed by the predecessor, this one features great locations and some brilliant tension, and Chris Pratt is as good as ever!

8 – Black Panther

Black Panther is one of the most acclaimed comic book movies of recent memory. Critics loved it, audiences loved it and I loved it… maybe not as much as everyone else though…

7 – Darkest Hour

Gary Oldman won the Oscar for best acting and it’s clear why. He’s unbelievable in this role, and really makes the film work. There’s inspiration, courage and pride in this picture, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

6 – Oceans 8

A great entry into the franchise with some brilliant talent in front of the camera, and a light tone to ensure enjoyment. Oceans 8 is damn good and my 7th favourite film of the year so far.

5 – Solo: A Star Wars Story

Don’t believe all the hate Solo: A Star Wars Story is getting, because it’s not bad like people are making out. It’s really good in fact and definitely one of the better additions to the Star Wars saga. Don’t miss out on this one if you get the chance.

4 – Hereditary

This is where it starts getting hard. You can put Hereditary 2nd and I would still be satisfied. This was a masterpiece and a terrifying one at that! Toni Collette’s performance is the best of the year so far, she’s terrific in the lead role. Many, many scares in this one with some horrific imagery makes Hereditary one of the best horror films in recent memory.

3 – Avengers: Infinity War

At this point it’s all interchangeable. This can be number 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Tomorrow it may be number 2. But for now, it’s 3rd. Awesome action sequences and a heartbreaking ending makes this the best MCU film so far. But like I said, it feels wrong to put it so far from the top so just consider this as a tie for number 1, because I love these 5 films all the same. Anyway, bring on Avengers 4!

2 – Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Great action, great stunt work and great characters are what makes this entry into the M:I franchise possibly the best. Easily the action movie of the year.

1 – Sicario 2: Soldado

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. Sicario 2: Soldado blew me away, ever since I first saw it back in June. Gruesome, violent and horrific are the best words to describe this thriller. Make sure to read my full review of this masterpiece and don’t miss out on this film.

~Bonus number 1~

(Check the disclaimer)

1 – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This would, of course, be number 1 but due to it’s 2017 US release, I’ve chosen not to include it on my official list (even though it was released this year in the UK). This is just a bonus number 1 for anyone who’s interested. Like I said, I think this is possibly my favourite film that has been released in the 21st century due to its excellent writing and phenomenal performances. The fact this masterpiece lost to The Shape of Water in the Best Picture category is ridiculous.
